How to take deposits as a mobile car detailer
If you're mobile, no-shows cost more than they do for a fixed shop — you drove there, you blocked out the slot, and the next customer already booked someone else. Deposits are the single highest-leverage change most detailers can make. Here's exactly how to roll them out.
Why deposits work
A booking without a deposit is a wish. A booking with $25 down is a commitment. When customers put real money on a slot, no-show rates drop from a typical 15–20% in mobile detailing to under 5%. That alone is 2–4 extra full details a month for a solo operator.
How much should the deposit be?
- Small details ($75–$150 total): $25 flat.
- Full details ($200–$400 total): $50 or 25%.
- Paint correction / ceramic ($800+): 30–50%. You're blocking a full day or two — protect it.
Deposits should apply to the final invoice, not be an extra charge. Say that clearly on the booking page — it removes the biggest objection instantly.
The exact wording to use
"A $50 deposit holds your slot and comes off your final invoice. It's fully refundable up to 24 hours before your appointment."
Refundability is the trust unlock. Almost no one asks for a refund, but knowing they can removes the psychological friction of paying online.
How to actually collect the deposit
- Connect Stripe to your booking app. Standard rate (~2.9% + 30¢), money in your bank in 1–2 days. Never accept deposits over Venmo — chargebacks aren't protected and reconciliation is a nightmare.
- Put a public booking link on your Instagram bio, Google Business profile, and Facebook page. The deposit is collected inside the booking flow — you're never the middleman.
- Auto-email a confirmation the moment the deposit clears, and a reminder 24 hours before the appointment.
Handling refund and no-show edge cases
- Cancels more than 24 hours out: refund in full. Costs nothing and buys goodwill.
- Cancels inside 24 hours: deposit is non-refundable but can transfer to a future booking within 30 days.
- Full no-show: keep the deposit. That's what it's for.
Common objections (and answers)
"I don't want to pay before I see the work." — Refundable up to 24 hours out, and applied to your total. You're not paying extra.
"Nobody else in town asks for deposits." — That's why they get ghosted three times a week. You won't.
